New Feature: TaxJar Integration — Automated U.S. Sales Tax

Brink Commerce now offers a native TaxJar integration, enabling automated U.S. sales tax calculation and reporting directly within the platform. The integration handles the full tax lifecycle — from real-time calculation at checkout, through tax reporting on delivery, to refund transaction management.

Overview

The TaxJar integration calculates accurate, real-time U.S. sales tax during checkout based on product tax codes (HS codes), delivery address, and applicable state and local tax rules. Tax transactions are automatically reported to TaxJar upon delivery, and refund transactions are created when orders are refunded or compensated.

Supported Checkout Integrations

The integration is available for the following checkout flows:

  • Kustom Checkout (formerly Klarna Checkout)

  • Adyen

Configuration

Merchant Portal setup — TaxJar is configured as a tax provider in the Merchant Portal. You connect it to the U.S. market and provide your TaxJar API key. TaxJar is currently only available for the U.S. market.

Product Tax Codes — A new Tax Code field is available on product variants, allowing you to assign Harmonized System (HS) codes to your products. This ensures TaxJar applies the correct tax rate for each product category. The Tax Code is visible in the product view in the Merchant Portal.

What's Included

Real-time tax calculation at checkout — Once the delivery address is available during checkout, Brink calls TaxJar's tax calculation API to compute accurate sales tax at both order and item level. The detailed tax breakdown is stored and presented in the checkout, and the correct tax amounts are forwarded to the payment provider.

Automatic tax reporting on delivery — When an order is delivered, Brink automatically creates an order transaction in TaxJar. This means tax is only reported for orders that are actually fulfilled — no manual reporting needed.

Refund and compensation handling — When a refund or compensation is processed, Brink automatically creates the corresponding refund transaction(s) in TaxJar, matching refunded items to their respective deliveries.

TaxJar transaction visibility — The Merchant Portal displays TaxJar transaction IDs for orders and associated refunds directly in the order view, with links to TaxJar where available.

What Doesn't Require Action

No TaxJar action is triggered on order cancellations, order line modifications, shipping fee modifications, or order releases — since tax has not yet been reported to TaxJar at those stages.

Good to Know

No per-calculation cost — TaxJar pricing is based on the number of orders, not the number of tax calculation calls. This means tax is recalculated as needed during checkout without impacting your TaxJar costs.

Tax-exempt orders — If you sell to tax-exempt customers (e.g. government agencies), an optional customer ID can be provided to support exemption handling through TaxJar.

Why It Matters

This integration simplifies U.S. tax compliance by offloading complex, jurisdiction-level tax logic to TaxJar. Merchants benefit from accurate real-time tax calculation, automated tax reporting and refund handling, and a smoother path to expanding into the U.S. market — without building or maintaining custom tax logic.
